Campaign Description
Hello everyone, it’s Lily and Chloe here. During our travels, we are currently volunteering as English teachers here at NDCCO School, an NGO in Siem Reap, Cambodia. We have been deeply moved by the magic of this place- especially the students, the community, and the life-changing work happening here.
Born into a poor and homeless farming family, Kimlean (the principal here at NDCCO) decided to leave home at the age of 13 to search for a better life. After walking three days alone to Siem Reap, he was taken in by a Buddhist monk, who offered him a safe place to sleep and the opportunity to learn English- this is something that would go on to change his life…
After years of hard work, Kimlean found a job, and later brought to a tuk-tuk, using his income to support not just himself, but his family and community. His generosity grew with his success and in 2014, he opened a small free English school in the evenings for local children, funding everything from his own earnings.
Working these two jobs from sunrise until past midnight, Kimlean’s commitment has inspired everyone who meets him—including Paul Smith, a traveler who helped transform the small school into the registered NGO it is today. With community support, land was purchased for a permanent school.
NDCCO School provides free English lessons to local children—many coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. Learning English here gives them access to better job opportunities, helping break the cycle of poverty for their families and community.
But this is more than a school. From our time here so far, it is clear that it is a safe space, a community, and for many children—a source of food they wouldn’t otherwise have.
The school used to provide meals five days a week, but due current conflicts with Thailand, funding and help from volunteers is at an all time low- they can now only afford to offer meals twice a week. For many students, those two meals are the only proper nourishment they have.
Despite these challenges, the students arrive with huge smiles, determination, and a genuine excitement to learn. Their kindness and warmth is infectious, and has already changed us. We believe they deserve every chance to pursue a brighter future.
Any donations given, are greatly appreciated- not just by us, but from every child at the school. ❤️
